It started at the kitchen table, in 2024.
SchoolGPT began with two parents and their own children — and a simple worry about the AI those children were already using. What we built to keep our own kids safe became a platform used by hundreds of thousands of children, and a mission to remove every barrier to learning.
How it began
A parent's worry
Sam and Atul introduced their own children to AI — and quickly saw that the children were being exposed to it either way. They realised they needed to teach their kids about AI: not just to keep them safe, but to prepare them for a future where AI is everywhere.
The tools weren't built for children
Using OpenAI's tools, they found the responses were too long, the vocabulary was unfamiliar, and the content simply wasn't suitable for a child.
The incident that started it
After an incident involving Christmas, they decided they needed to build something they'd actually be comfortable putting in front of their own children.
The first version — and 100k children a month
So they built the first version of SchoolGPT. Other children started using it, and before they knew it more than 100,000 children were on the platform every month.
The bacon sandwich
When a Muslim child asked the AI what they should have for breakfast, it innocently suggested a bacon sandwich. That moment made something clear: the experience had to be personalised to every child — their culture, their context, their needs.
Schools wanted more
Schools loved the AI, but wanted it highly tailored to each year group while adapting to each individual pupil. That need shaped the first version of SchoolGPT for schools.
Removing every barrier to learning
Working with schools and children, and seeing the impact on literacy, they realised that removing every barrier to learning gave the work real meaning — and could be life-changing, for children everywhere.
